 Respiratory protection protects the wearer. Respiratory protection refers to Respirators, which are protective devices that cover a person's nose and mouth or the entire face or head to help reduce the wearer's exposure from inhaling air containing contaminants.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires workers to have the make and model of Respirator to be used tested for fit at the time of first use and annually thereafter (or even earlier if the user's Respirator has changed significantly) for changes in weight or facial features, such as may occur with extensive dental work). Fit testing ensures that the Respirator user receives the desired level of protection by minimising the leakage of contaminants into the mask.
